Conceived as a carrier-based bomber for the Royal Navy, the prototype first flew in April 1958. Designed to operate at high subsonic speeds and carrying a wide range of weapons over long ranges, it featured a powerful navigation and innovations such as a weapons bay. The first operational version entered service with the Royal Navy in 1962. In the late 1960`s, the Buccaneer S2 was chosen for RAF service, No 12 Squadron being the first to receive the type in 1970.
